Grassland, Shrubland and Desert Ecosystems Program at Moscow Lab
The Grassland, Shrubland and Desert Ecosystems (GSDE) Program plans, organizes, and conducts research for restoration of disturbed upland and riparian ecosystems. GSDE scientists also evaluate benefits and costs of restoration, monitor restored ecosystems to ensure sustainability, diversity, and resilience, and transfer information to user groups. Research focuses on procedures for producing, handling, and outplanting nursery seedlings to ensure placement of high quality, genetically and ecologically adapted plants that are essential for community reestablishment and long-term maintenance. Scientists study edaphic (pertaining to soil), climatic, and ecophysiological parameters to critically assess short- and long-term success of wildland plantings. Nursery managers, botanists, range ecologists, and others participate in designing and implementing regional and national studies with GSDE. Results from the studies are provided to appropriate user groups. Grassland, Shrubland and Desert Ecosystems Moscow Lab Personnel
