J. Donley - Summary of activities at the MFSL : 1984-2004

  1. measuring 10's of thousands of tree-rings from Alaskan and Boise N.F. samples (over 3 years) in various silviculture and management studies.
  2. involved with collecting and isolating 10,000/12,000 Armillaria rhizomorph, bark-fan, rotten-wood, cap-tissue and single-spore samples from over 400 plots all over the western USA (over 17 years) in our huge study to help predict and manage this root-rot disease.
  3. performed 80-90,000/105,000 Armillaria somatic-incompatibility-tests (over 14 years) to accurately delineate individuals and supply important evidence to help characterize species from our large collection.
  4. performed 3800 microscopic Armillaria-isolate pairing-experiments, including 1460 computer-image-pictures, to help examine inheritance and factors responsible for behavior and distribution.
  5. curator of living-archives (necessitating > 20,000 culture-transfers) of over 2,800 genetically different Armillaria isolates and over 220 genetically different Phellinus isolates.
  6. involved with obtaining PCR-product from over 800 Armillaria isolates and editing more than 1200 molecular-DNA-sequences thereof (over 4 years) adding this new technique providing crucial evidence into many parts of our huge study.
  7. involved with a (cheap and successful) permanent-storage-technique (of Basidiomycetes and other species) necessary to accomplish our goals.

J. Donley - Summary of community activities at Moscow, Idaho : 1982-2004

Having a part-time job here at the MFSL has fortuitously enabled me to undertake many extra-curricular activities in the Moscow community: including volunteering as a dance-musician/composer (playing percussion and simultaneous alto/soprano recorders) and sound-effects-person for the Spectrum II Art and Dance School for 9 out of the last 10 years, playing for hundreds of dance-classes (of all age groups) using a repertoire of over 50 original musical/sound accompaniments to dances/skills/positions/inventions etc.

Also, as a result of my Spectrum II affiliation, I've played for dance-classes at the Turning Point preschool for 4 years and at the Moscow Charter school for 2 years.

In a seemingly "natural" outgrowth of my great interest in original and homemade music/sounds (composition and instrumentation), since 1996, starting as a "Rendezvous in the Park for Kids" event "Art-stop", I've been creating and sharing my "Recycled-Music-Fun-Station" (involving over 200 hundred items to play music/sounds with (completely active audience-participation), all constructed out of "recycled/re-used" materials) at over 50 different events involving 6 local schools and 2 local child-care-centers and all 7 Latah County Library-branches, also working with the Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute and the Moscow Parent-Toddler Co-op and the Young Child and Family of the Palouse group.

I hope to stay in Moscow working at the labs for many more years continuing to grow in all of the above work and activities along with my volunteer-radio-disc-jockeying at the University of Idaho's KUOI-FM station (now in my 23rd year) and volunteering weekly at the Moscow Food Co-op (now in my 13th year) and being a Moscow Mentor with the public school system (now in my 3rd year, with the same young person).
