Results to Date

  1. Forested sites have slower decomposition rates than harvested sites.
  2. There is evidence of difference in rates of decomposition among different treatments.
  3. Decomposition rates are faster at the surface than deeper in the soil profile.
  4. Large microsite variability exists between the different species of stakes used (see Priest River results).
  5. There is a noticeable difference when observing the stakes from different extraction dates (see Priest River results).

Ongoing Analyses

  • Analyses of lignin, sugars, and nutrients are being analyzed from representative wood blocks for each treatment.
  • Soil temperature, moisture, and aeration data are being integrated into analyses for a future mineral soil decomposition model.

Perspective

This study is part of a worldwide investigation of organic matter decomposition in mineral soil. Sites of ongoing research are Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Canada, Finland, Germany and Switzerland. The results will be incorporated into a database for the development of a mineral soil decomposition model.
