Uplifted mountains that formed predominantly in limestone, sandstone, and shale. Igneous rocks intrude into the uplifted limestone and are exposed at higher elevations. Elevations range from 3500 to 9200 feet. Drainage density is moderate.
Mean annual precipitation ranges from 13 to 42 inches, about 40 to 60 percent falling as snow. The soil temperature and moisture regimes are cryic (frigid at lower elevations) and typic ustic.
