July 9, 2008—United States Senate passes Senate Resolution 440, recognizing soils on the same level of importance as air & water.

August 12, 2008—The national Soil Information Network (SOILNET) Charter has been signed by both the USDA Forest Service’s National Forest Systems and Research & Development administrators, providing “a virtual science needs assessment, science delivery and management problem solution team to address National Forest and Grassland soil management issues.”
