Uplifted mountains that formed in sandstone and mudstone with a central core of igneous intrusive rock. Elevations range from 6000 to 11000 feet. Drainage density is moderate.

Climate:

Mean annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 60 inches, about 70 percent falling as snow. The soil temperature and moisture regimes are cryic and typic ustic.
