Foothills that formed in metasedimentary and volcanic rocks. Elevations range from 4500 to 7100 feet. Drainage density is moderate to high.

Climate:

Mean annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 25 inches, about 30 percent falling as snow. The soil temperature and moisture regimes are frigid (cryic at higher elevations) and typic ustic.
